Card Not Present

There are three basic things that determine what you will pay for each transaction.

  • The payment card type. A debit card is different than a credit card or a gift card
  • The sales transaction type. This is how a merchant will process the card; largely whether it is swiped or keyed into a terminal or online.
  • The merchant’s industry type. The requirements of a restaurant or hotel business are different than a retail store or online store.

Cost management is the key. Interchange rates are the single largest cost component in payment processing. If Visa and MasterCard network rules are not followed precisely, your costs could be higher than usual. Unfortunately, most merchants feel powerless to affect or minimize these costs. NDMS, however, is committed to help you manage these costs, starting with NDMS Clear Pricing,™ where the transparency of all transactions and merchant services equals savings!

Three Steps To Saving Money

The rules that govern interchange rates are complex and can be difficult to interpret. Visa and MasterCard each have more than 100 rates that might apply to any individual payment card transaction. Minimizing interchange costs include three critical steps:

  1. Setup protocol. Before you start processing payment transactions with NDMS, we will analyze your business environment to make sure that you are set up to qualify for the best possible interchange rates. Our analysis includes:

    • Selecting the correct Merchant Classification Code
    • Determining the most effective data transmission format
    • Establishing the right rules for dealing with exceptions
  2. Ensure full, complete and accurate data transmission. To qualify for the lowest possible rates, you need to send and receive complete transaction data. As you transmit transaction data to NDMS, there will be times when key data elements may be missing or incorrectly formatted or when an alternative payment processing method might reduce costs.

  3. Benchmarking and analytics. If your rates are increasing over time, NDMS can provide the reasons why and help identify potential solutions. We also offer NDMS Online Reporting, which is our industry-leading, web-based reporting solution that gives you real-time information securely over the Internet, day or night. NDMS reporting includes a full range of operational and financial reports.

Application approval required. All transactions are subject to payment card association guidelines. Interchange, dues, assessments and other Visa/MasterCard/Discover processing and bank fees are passed through to merchants as applicable and only for services employed. Terms, conditions and fees are subject to change without notice.

Card present payment card “swiped’ rate of 1.59% will be charged on qualified, swiped Visa/MasterCard/Discover Network transactions that are electronically authorized. Card not-present payment card "non-swiped" or "key-entered” rate of 1.99% will be charged on all qualified manually-keyed Visa/MasterCard/Discover Network transactions that have AVS. All Visa/MasterCard/Discover Network transactions that do not meet the requirements stated above or business payment cards, foreign payment cards and transactions that do not meet Visa/MasterCard/Discover Network requirements for the best interchange program, will be surcharged a "Mid-Qualified" rate of .75% or "Non-Qualified" rate of 1.50%. Different discount rates for American Express and Japanese Credit Bureau (JCB) may apply.

The rates and fees listed above include the standard fees required of operating and maintaining a merchant services account and are not meant to be all-inclusive. Other fees, details, terms and conditions as outlined in the Merchant Processing Agreement, application and other documentation may apply.
